This wine masterclass was a collaboration among Gramona, Arcadia, GFour and Broken Eggs held on 27 November 2018. The decision of joining this masterclass was simple. I trust all these brands, especially Broken Eggs. This little Spanish restaurant located in Ekkamai was headed by the Galician-born chef Jacobo Astray, the guy behind Bangkok-based private fine-dining business Gula. Chef Jacobo was a cook at ElBulli, a famed cliffside restaurant in Catalonia, Spain, that held three Michelin stars before it closed seven years ago. He is well equipped with all the culinary techniques for his own joint here in Bangkok. Honestly, I personally love his food.

Back to the wine masterclass, how could I not mention about Gramona? I was thrilled to have met the owner, Mr. Xavier Gramona, who told the wine masterclass participants about the history of Gramona. It’s a long history. As far back as 1816, a member of his family has been making wine in the vicinity of San Sadurni d’Anoia. The Gramona name began to be put on bottles of ‘Cava Champagne’ in 1921. Today, the house is one of the few remaining family-owned estates in the region, most having been hoovered up by large corporations in the last half-century. What a brand! The first sip of the welcome drink at this masterclass was awesome. It’s Gramona La Cuvee Brut Gran Reserva 2013.

The selected wines of Gramona were carefully paired with the scrumptious dishes prepared by Chef Jacobo. The taste of the wine impresses me. The food pairing was also amazing. The olive sphere was bursting with flavoursome olive. The black ink rice and the burrata cheese were the best dishes I have ever had in the year! Good food, nice wine and making new friends are the reasons why I join wine masterclass.

Will Gourmet Bangkok recommend Broken Eggs?

I like Broken Eggs. It’s a small restaurant but Chef Jacobo cooks with hearts! I also like the choices of gin here. It’s a comfy, homey place for real, delicious Spanish food.
