Dated back to the 70s and 80s, the arrival of VCR struck many people with surprises. This little black box was introduced to make watching movies at home possible. Now in this hi-tech 21st century, VCR still strikes people with surprises, this time it takes the form of a little black house. What is VCR?

VCR – The Little Black House in Pudu, Kuala Lumpur

VCR is located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, in the old neighbourhood of Pudu. This two-storey little black house is totally inconspicuous. No big sign, no velvet parking, no concierge standing outside, it’s just a house in black that first-time visitors may mistake it as an ordinary residence. Once you open the door of the house, you instantly enter a different space. You will be surprised to see a full house of happy customers and attracted to the pleasing aroma of coffee. This little black house is a café in vogue; this little black house is VCR.

Why is VCR such a crowd-puller?

The soul of a café is coffee and its heart is the food. VCR has its impressive soul and generous heart to capture all his customers regardless of their race, sex, age and religion. Headed by Kenneth, who just won the third place in the 2017 Malaysian Brewers Cup, VCR baristas are dedicated to delivering the best cup of coffee to each of their customers.

Cold brew is different from traditional iced coffee, which is just hot brewed coffee poured over ice. Cold brew is made by mixing coffee grounds and cold water and letting it sit for a much longer extraction time. It is very easy to drink and addictively refreshing. This coffee is floral and fruity, and of course healthier as there is less acidity and is sugarless.

Other types of coffee

As a coffee lover, I love my coffee.

“Although it is a subjective talk when it comes to the taste of coffee, the crowd at the café already tells a lot how VCR’s coffee is” ~ Neng

“ There are a number of variables, including time, temperature, grind size, flow rate (how fast water flows through grounds), contact time, and coffee type (arabica vs. robusta). We devoted all our effort to brew the best coffee for VCR customers.”  ~ Kenneth

The heart of VCR – food

VCR’s kitchen is headed by a 27-year-old young chef whose background is engineering, you may have a second thought about the food served there. Wait a minute! Isn’t an engineer just awarded three Michelin stars for his restaurant in Hong Kong? This young Head Chef knows how to win the hearts of VCR’s customers. Hearty portion, innovative dishes, and tastiness of the food are the shout-outs.

Must-try dishes at VCR

(1) VCR Big Breakfast (Chipolata sausages, heirloom tomato, lamb bolognese, mushroom fricassee, turkey ham or beef bacon, free-range eggs (any styles) on sourdough toast)

This breakfast filled my stomach with high satisfaction. The star of this dish is the chipolata sausage, a kind of fresh sausage that is famous for its rich flavours of spices, herbs and fresh meat. The perfectly-seasoned scrambled egg was cooked just right to keep its moist to eat with the crispy sourdough toast.

“My kind of breakfast on a lazy Sunday.” ~ Chelsea

(2) Soft-shell crab burger (Deep-fried soft-shell crab, housemade tartar sauce, Furikake sunny side up, onion jam, quick pickle kyuri)

This burger is photogenic and tastes sexy when savouring it. The soft-shell crab was fried to a perfect crisp on the outside, even after sitting on the dining table for more than 10 minutes, it still tasted awesome. It wasn’t soaked with oil, so layered flavours of the buns, veggies, soft-shell crab and sauce were experienced on the palate. Honestly, it’s a plate-licking dish!

(3) French Toast (Espresso no churn ice-cream, brioche French toast, raspberry compote, crumbles, mocha sauce)

Forget about your mum’s advice on no ice-cream in the morning. The French toast has a rich, velvety mouth feel and pillowy texture. The espresso-flavoured ice-cream tasted mild but was aromatic. It’s like eating an iced espresso with toast! To savour this dish, cut a piece of toast and eat with some ice-cream, raspberry compote, crumbles and mocha sauce!

“This French Toast is another dish you would not want to miss, and we believe it can make a perfect choice for brunch!” ~ Chelsea

(4) Turkish Style Eggs (Rich Pomodoro sauce with chickpea, 63-degree eggs, Chipolata sausage, dollop of bright cow Greek Yoghurt, Pistachio, Housemade Sourdough Toast)

A 63-degree egg is always my favourite. It is only by cooking the egg slowly in a water bath at 63 degrees that it can yield a quivering, uniform mass. It can also create the best egg lava effect. I love this dish a lot as it can be shared among friends easily and make the most flavoursome dipping sauce for the housemade sourdough toast. In fact, if you have a big group of friends or a super elastic appetite, order an extra serving of the toast to truly enjoy this dish to the max.
